Evil Dead (2013) review

Evil Dead was a film franchise created and directed by Sam Raimi in the 80's. The recent Evil Dead film wasn't directed by him but it serves as a reboot of the series. The last film was Army or Darkness, a film which weighs a little more on fantasy than horror but still was equally entertaining as it predecessors.
While I haven't watched the first three films of the franchise, based on reading summaries, there are elements in the old films that was present in this new installment. The plot elements such as possession, the book of the dead and the cabin.

The film is about five young adults, particularly focusing on the character 'Mia' who is a drug addict and the other four (which includes her brother) are trying to help cleanse her from her addiction. After discovering a book in a cellar filled with suspended dead cats and reading some passages in it, strange things began to happen.

I'm sure people who have a strange love for gore and suspense will love this movie. Think of it as a cross of The Exorcist and Saw.
The plot was nothing new, even the setting- people stuck in the middle of a forest, heavy rainfall- it's all the basic elements of a horror movie. What makes Evil Dead interesting is that along with the heart-pounding suspense of each scenes and matching bgms, it is also gut-wrenching because of all the inhuman gore involved.
The story is pretty straightforward, it didn't dwell much on back stories, not even a proper introduction was given.
If the fans of the first films of the franchise watches this, I'm sure they'd think of this film as just an opening number to what Raimi and Alvarez has planned. At the very least, if the audience wasn't content with this reboot, we can be sure that there's Army of Darkness 2 coming up along with the continuation of the reboot (might be titled Evil Dead 2) and a third film which merges the old and the new.
