The anime ended a month ago but the manga is still ongoing and far from over. The sad thing here is that Shingeki no Kyojin's mangaka, Isayama Hajime, is a monthly author which, as it states, release only one chapter per month. The anime ended in the capture of Annie which is around chapter 30-40. With the current course of the manga, a season 2 won't be up for at least say 1 and a half years.
For me the best bet would be, following up with the success of the anime, wait for the manga to finish then make a season 2. If 26 episodes won't cover everything, then at least there won't be anymore long wait.
...that's just my opinion though because I have no clear idea of how hard and costly it is to secure the licence to adapt the manga and produce the anime itself.
The latest chapter is Chapter 51: Rivaille's Squad which I just finished reading a few hours ago starting with chapter 45.
Even with still images, Isayama has that knack of stimulating my imagination and making each action sequences animated in my mind. I'm particularly impressed with the character development. While the pacing may seem too fast, Isayama made it work through flashbacks, and gave it much more depth.
Going through the last few chapters up to chapter 51, the author filled me with a mix of hope and despair.
Throughout the course of the manga (and anime) I've grown to like Hannes, the friend/guardian turned mentor of our three main protagonists. While he wasn't shown much as the story progressed, he played a vital role some of his appearances particularly the motivation he gave Armin and Mikasa after Eren was kidnapped by (I suppose this doesn't count as spoilers anymore, right?) Reiner in his Armored Titan form along with Berthold with Ymir in tow.
Hannes next appearance was with the scouting troops together with the military police under the command of Irvin Smith to recapture Eren.
While all appeared well in order, the titan who devoured Eren's mother reappeared. Eren and Mikasa, both in no condition to fight, were practically waiting for their deaths as they lie in front of the titan, however Hannes guarded the two...to no avail.
I was disappointed. How could Isayama kill off a vital character that simply? It wasn't anything great or notable, Isayama turned Hannes into an anonymous character. He didn't even give Hannes any parting words, the manga just progressed from Hannes standing his ground to being half devoured by the very titan that devoured Eren's mother.
It didn't seem like it affected Eren all that much as it did at the time when his mother got devoured, and the latest chapter didn't even made any mention of him. But it did pave a way to reveal an important turning point in the story, there's something more to Eren than being able to transform into a titan.
But that should be left off in the succeeding chapters.
Despite Hannes' meaningless death, though, I found hope in the form of Irvin Smith. Of course it's normal to assume that Irvin is a strong character because he's commander, when a titan bit his right arm, I thought he was done for. But, staying true to his title, the commander of the Scouting Legion continued to lead his men, and he was, in fact, the one who released Eren from Berthold's grasp. He did all that with his left hand.
The latest chapter ended with him on the sidelines, whatever Isayama have in store for this character, I sure do hope it's not about being bait to them titans.
A few SnK fandoms are also hot on the topic of the relationship of Armin and Irvin.
There was a panel in one of the recently released chapters (45-51) where Armin had his eyes fixed on Irvin for some reason only known to the author himself. Similarities of the two had been hotly debated which are actually valid argument. Some of these are:
- their hair color
- their strategic minds
- their ability to adapt to the current situation (Armin showed this trait mid-series, a huge development in his character)
- their names sound alike: Armin-Irvin
Also, Armin's parents were never shown (I don't remember if they were mentioned) in the series, yet. All I know is that he had a grandfather which he remained together with even after the fall of Wall Maria, but lost sometime after because of being forced to volunteer as titan food.
They do look alike...don't they? But then again, Armin also looks a lot like Historia so anything can go, really.
The next chapter won't be out for a while, but Isayama Hajine is doing a pretty good job with Shingeki no Kyojin. The story is remarkable and complex, character development are well executed and those characters that aren't who they appear to be just can't be hated all together...but he killed Hannes...he killed Hannes...
