Heavy

I just recently read a post on 9gag about 7 of the most heartbreaking animated films that existed.

The post included Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies), When the Wind Blows, Watership Down, Felidae, Barefoot Gen, The Plague Dogs and Fantastic Planet.

I've already watched Hotaru no Haka, just the surface of the film alone was enough to run all the water in my body through my eyes dry, how much more devastating were the others?

Just as I was about to eat lunch a few minutes ago, I ran through the plot of Fantastic Planet. The concept of humans (Oms) as pets for greater beings was extremely frightening. The story of good vs. injustice (not exactly good vs. bad) had a good ending but seeing the artistry of the film and the idea behind the story is fearful enough to take away my appetite.

Next I watched the opening scene of The Plague of Dogs. So we see water...deep waters as the screen goes up, and then suddenly a dog barks struggling to get air. Scientists look on from a safe spot and steadily observes as the dog drowns. It's a kid's show but this opening is definitely not for the eyes of children unless you want them to get a traumatic childhood. I haven't ran through the plot yet as to not spoil myself of the contents of the film but the opening scene quickly adds context to what the film is about. Terrifying, very terrifying.

Then I checked on Barefoot Gen. It's an animated film which depicts the destruction and aftermath that the Hiroshima bombing brought. I didn't expect to see...well just exactly what happens after the atomic bomb was dropped. Complete devastation and innocent deaths, all in a gruesome manner. People say it's an accurate depiction of what happened and just thinking that it really happened 70 years ago makes the heavy feeling more unbearable.

I think I just died multiple times in parallel or alternate dimensions just watching this.

I don't usually react to most things but I just felt like writing what I feel right now towards those 7 films listed above. There's just that scary and uncertain feeling that I'm having now. And it's pretty hard to get rid of it.

WARNING: I simply shared the video to this blog, whether you watch or not is entirely up to you
