I greeted entertainment this year with a torrent of TV series and a couple of anime series. It seems unlikely that I got so addicted to popular TV shows that isn't The Big Bang Theory. Since the Christmas holidays I went full retard watching the Game of Thrones, Haibane Renmei, FLCL and the new season of Sherlock.
The Game of Thrones
The Game of Thrones is the TV adaptation of George R.R. Martin's series of novels collectively called A Song of Ice and Fire. The series first aired on 2011 (if I'm not mistaken) and its third season concluded last year. Their fourth season will air April this year and it will follow the events triggered by the infamous Red Wedding, Daenerys' libaration of Yunkai, the arrival of the White Walkers and the victory of the reunited Lannisters.
I started watching the Game of Thrones by the start of the holiday break. With only 10 episodes per season I thought it wouldn't take me long but it wasn't after clicking on the pilot episode where I realized each episode is almost as long as a feature film (this begs the question of just how much is their budget for each season). I've never read the novels before and I only became aware of the series through word of mouth.
By the time I finished episode one, I knew that I was going to enjoy this series.
I recently finished watching season 3 last Friday. Now I fully understand just how much of a killer novelist George R.R. Martin is. But each death is not without meaning as even minor characters in the novel can give such a huge turning point relevant in the story. Although perma-death is really not such a good thing since most of the characters there will start to warm-up to you before they unexpectedly get killed.
The characters were all interesting more so because of how well each actor played their role. I especially enjoyed the characters of Tyrion, Tywin, Varys and Petyr, and the conversations between them. Other characters that I enjoy watching in action are Brienne, Jaime and some from the Night's Watch.
The shallow part of the series features the typical good and bad characters, but as the series delves in deeper as the characters slowly develop you'd ask yourself, just who's the bad guy here. The Lannisters? Starks? Baratheon?
When you start to think about it, one House's act receives a reaction from the other until it set the story in full motion.
I also note the series' use of dark humor despite the story's serious plot.
This is on of the television series where I thought I'd actually never watch because of all the anime I have in stock. I actually made time to watch this and that should be enough to prove just how good the series is.
There's always a surprise in each episode, and whether it's a good or bad surprise totally depends on where you stand in the story.
Finally, my favorite quote in the series: "If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention."
