My wonderful weekend of no academic homeworks is ending and what better way to send it off than a marathon of So Ra No Wo To.
So Ra No Wo To is another war themed anime produced by A-1 Pictures and Aniplex which focuses on the 1121st Platoon. Think Valkyria Chronicles but lighter in tone. Even so, they didn't fall short on delivering really heavy emotions scattered throughout the series. Most of these moments owe a lot to the music played at the particular scene with the trumpet (most notably Amazing Grace).
Even if the whole series is dominated by child's play shenanigans, they somehow always find a way to integrate these seemingly pointless moments into special ones, however the anime spent too much time on that that it moved on to the main plot a little too late in the series.
The last three episodes drove the series into greatness, though a little forced on the last. The dialogues are also filled with powerful lines from unexpected characters. One instance is this:
Character developments weren't of the typical method used in most anime where one or 2 episodes are dedicated to a particular character only to pass them off as secondary characters on the following arcs. The characters improved as the story went on, though not equally, each had their respective roles intact until the final episode.
Lastly, in the anime's technical parts. The music played a large role in the series, though I can't say there's anything special in the opening and ending theme song. The opening theme by Kalafina was great but the opening sequence doesn't entirely fit with the song. The ending theme is too lively that it ruins the mood of emotional episodes.
Voice acting was definitely solid. The main characters all had their own magnificent voice in the series. The familiar voice of Yu Kobayashi and Aoi Yuki made me feel at home immediately.
The style of animation per episode was kept constant, however episode 6 took it a notch higher with their Baccano-like scenarios.
Overall, So Ra No Wo To is a definite must try.
So far, it's the best anime that I've watched this year (even though it's an old title, 2010)
Music: 9.5/10
Story: 9/10
Animation: 9/10
Characters: 10/10
