Over-the-top action that defies the laws of Physics, insane combos, fantastic visuals, excellent voice-work, fascinating characters, captivating dialogue, an interesting (and a little confusing, but that's just me) story, witches, angels, guns, liquor, obscene language, in some cases even nudity, all these I enjoyed in Bayonetta and I'm not even done with the first chapter.
There are a lot of interesting concepts in Bayonetta's combat mechanic such as the Witch Time, Climax, Torture and how the combos are linked together. The over the top action is not something I'm joking about as Bayonetta is a game that is serious about not being too serious. What I mean by that is despite the themes explored in the game it still is wacky, extreme and humorous while still maintaining an interesting atmosphere. It doesn't live off of repetition because even when I got most of the concepts down there are still plenty of surprises and new additions to the gameplay as I progressed. Speaking of progression, I haven't finished chapter one yet because of this:
the 80-hour battery life was as advertised. Well done, Nintendo! |
My first few minutes playing Bayonetta was a little confusing as I had a hard time reading the subtitles (I switched the audio to Japanese) while kicking some angelic butt. The first few combos I made were out of random button mashing but from the look of things Bayonetta seemed to have still dealt some heavy damage. What I enjoy about these combos is that, when chained together, Bayonetta doesn't fight in an aggressive manner instead she dances. And dang I died a few times just watching her dance in the middle of the battlefield during the first half of chapter 1.
The prologue serves as the tutorial. So we got a gun, some awesome kicks and punches, then we get Witch Time. Witch Time is a combat mechanic that activates whenever a dodge at the last second is successful, when it activates time slows down and Bayonetta is given a window of opportunity to nail some hard hitting combos.
After the tutorial at the graveyard Bayonetta comes face to face with someone from her past, Jeanne. Although they didn't fight this part of the game still kicked ass as the Torture mechanic is introduced - because what other better way is there to kill your enemies with style, eh?
I guess that's all for the moment. I don't feel like talking about an incomplete chapter 1 so, yeah sorry for that.
